PREFACE.

THE following translation, in its original shape, was published in Germany, as an appendant to Retsch's wellknown illustrations of the poem.* The observations which accompanied it (and which are now re-printed), contain all that the translator had to offer by way of explanation of his views, and of apology (which was indeed needed), for the defects of his translation. The version has, notwithstanding these defects, become popular; it has been re-printed by another German bookseller in a cheap form, and has had a large sale. This has induced the translator to hope, that a similar edition published in this country, and accompanied by the original, might be acceptable to the public. But before sending it to the press, he has anxiously revised the whole translation, with a view of rendering it more faithful. In performing this task, there is hardly a line that has not received some alteration, and it is hoped, generally, for the better. In the progress of this labor,
