New England makes a very strong showing as a good section to be born in, and each one of the six Eastern States has furnished a goodly quota to the first column, the total for New England being 1,839 or 21.37 per cent of the whole while of the second column it has only 1,232, or 14.32 per cent. New York, however, has 18.62 per cent in the first, and 23.70 per cent in the second row of figures. The Southern States furnish 1,429, or 16.61 per cent to the birth-place column, and 1,202, or 14 per cent to the other.

While the Americans located abroad are widely scattered over the earth, their numbers are not large, being only 243, or less than 3 per cent, who are permanent residents in foreign countrries. Of these 89 (largely literary) live in England, and the next largest items are 32 in France and 23 in Italy (in both cases principally. artists). Taken as a whole the table indicates that American men and women who attain more than local distinction are content with the United States, but have some tendency toward concentration in the larger cities of the country. There is also, however, a strong westward movement, commensurate with the general growth in population, and Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and all States west of the Mississippi river (including Louisiana) present, in each case, an increase from the first to the second column of figures. Outside of these the only States, etc., showing larger figures in the second than in the first column are the District of Columbia, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. West Virginia is the only State for which the two columns are evenly balanced.

The table, as it stands, embodies numerous other suggestions, but the foregoing will, perhaps, be sufficient to indicate its significance in a general way.

NECROLOGY

The following is a list of prominent men and women who have died since January 1, 1895. It will in many cases explain the absence of names which may be looked for in the biographical section of this book.

*

The names marked with a are those of persons whose death became known to the editor after the biography appearing in this volume was in type and too late to be eliminated.
