WHY

SECOND DAY OF THE MONTH.

Morning.

PSALM II.

HY do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

3. Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

5. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

6. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

7. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

8. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

10. Be wise now, therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

THE

Afternoon.

PSALM XCIII.

HE LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved. 2. Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

3. The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.

4. The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters; yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

5. Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.

THIRD DAY OF THE MONTH.

Morning.

PSALM VIII.

LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

2. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

3. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

5. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor.

6. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

7. All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8. The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsover passeth through the paths of the seas.

9. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Afternoon.

PSALM XCV.

COME, let us sing unto the LORD; let us make a joy

ful noise to the rock of our salvation.

2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

3. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

4. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.

5. The sea is his, and he made it; and his hands formed the dry land.

6. O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

7. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, if ye will hear his voice,

8. Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

9. When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.

10. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways;

11. Unto whom I sware in my wrath, that they should not enter into my rest.

FOURTH DAY OF THE MONTH.

Morning.

PSALM XVI.

PRESERVE me, O God; for in thee do I put my

trust.

2. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

3. But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

4. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

5. The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

6. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

7. I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

8. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

10. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11. Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for

evermore.

Afternoon.

PSALM XCVI.

SING unto the LORD a new song; sing unto the LORD, all the earth.

2. Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; show forth his salvation from day to day.

3. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.

4. For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.

5. For all the gods of the nations are idols; but the LORD made the heavens.

6. Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

7. Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.

8. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts.

9. O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; fear before him, all the earth.

10. Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved : he shall judge the people righteously.

11. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.

12. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the LORD;

13. For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
