But all public reformation must begin with individuals. Let each of us then reflect on his own guilt as a sinful creature by nature, and a transgressor in his life, let every one humble himself before his God for his iniquities, and implore mercy and forgiveness through the Son of God who died for our salvation. Let us be thankful that God has appointed us this deliverance from eternal misery and death, and this way of admission into the everlasting kingdom of peace and joy. Soon will all the events of this world cease with respect to us; then, however safe we have been from calamity here, what will it avail us, if our portion be "lamentation, and mourning, and woe, "*for ever? Here also, though we are the faithful servants of God, we cannot promise ourselves a freedom from the sorrows, troubles and distresses of life. The sword may be commissioned after long provocation, to "go through a land and smite the righteous with the wicked;" but if we have been faithful to God, if we have repented of sin, sought forgiveness through the Redeemer, and endeavoured" in sincerity, godliness and honesty to have our conversation in the world," God will re member us in the day of calamity: his presence will chear us in the last struggle, we shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger,"§ and though "men kill the body," our "souls" incapable of

being hurt by them, shall soar in safety to that blessed world "where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest,"*-where "sorrow and sighing shall be done away," and the "Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall lead us to living fountains of water, and God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes."

In conclusion, then my fellow-countrymen,-Ye know not what these eventful times shall bring forth,-whether God shall still ordain peace for us, or cause the rod of his anger to chasten us as well as others:-Ye know not whether, during our present paternal Monarch's reign, He may spare and bless us; but whether through despising his forbearance and long-suffering, He may choose, when our beloved Sovereign" goes the way of all the earth," "in his son's days,"§ to bring upon us the evils which our sins deserve.-Suffer me then, to exhort you to be prepared for both worlds,-to be armed for all the will of God, to stand prepared for trouble or joy, prosperity or adversity,-life or death. Worship God in sincerity,-obey the gospel of his Son,apply for pardon of sin through his atoning blood, -lead a holy life by the grace and help of the divine Spirit. Pray for the life of your gracious Sovereign,-implore a blessing on his Royal House, -promote the welfare of your country," seek the peace of the land in which ye dwell," and

pray unto the Lord for it; for in the peace thereof, shall ye have peace. But whether God be pleased to establish "peace and truth in your days" or not, continue his servants, and your final "end shall be peace." For "the work of righteousness is peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance for ever." The Lord shall be your support, and your God your glory. Now to God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be ascribed equal adoration and praise for ever. Amen.
