COAL MINES REGULATION ACTS.

1. In a mine ventilated by a furnace, with three separate ventilating districts and naked lights used in each, inflammable gas is detected issuing from the face in one of the districts while the men are working; state clearly what you would do (a) at the time, and (b) afterwards, were you in charge.

2. Under what conditions may a seam of coal be worked by a singe shaft?

3. Why is coal dust dangerous in a dry mine which is worked with safety lamps?

What special pre

cautions would you take when electricity is used for motors and lighting in such a mine? 4. In what circumstances is it necessary that only explosives on the permitted list be used underground?

Mention the precautions you would take before using them, in order to ensure safety. 5. What special precautions have to be taken in mines worked by safety lamps, when using electricity, (1) for relighting lamps, (2) for firing shots? Give reasons for the need of these precautions.

MODES OF WORKING.

1. Describe fully the mode by which you would work the following coal seams lying at a depth of 200 fathoms, and dipping 1 in 21.

Show by a sketch plan and section how you would lay out a portion of the workings.

2. Which of the seams given in Q. I would you work first? Give your reasons, and state the effect of working the seams in the reverse order to what you propose.

3. In working the seams given in Q. 1, give a complete sketch showing the incline and fittings you would adopt for lowering the tubs or trams (holding 15 cwts. each) to the main levels. Show all details and dimensions.

4. State how you would timber the working face and also the roadways of each seam given in Q. 1. 5. Great difficulty is experienced in keeping open the main roadways through the shaft pillars in a seam 250 fathoms deep on account of the pressure combined with the weak inature of roof and floor. State in detail the plan you would propose for securing the roadways and the shaftbottom, giving your reasons.

VENTILATION.

1. Two pits close together are to be sunk to a depth of 250 fathoms. Describe the plant and arrangements you would adopt for their ventilation while sinking, giving a sketch showing full details and dimensions.

2. Two coal seams, each 4 feet thick, 10 fathoms apart, and dipping 1 in 4, are to be opened out at the bottom of the two shafts referred to in the last question. Describe and show by a sketch plan

and section how you would lay off the workings in each seam around the shafts with a view to ventilation. State the kind and size of fan you would adopt for an expected output of 1,000 tons per day.

3. Give the percentage composition of atmospheric air. In the following analysis of the air of a mine, state what vitiating gas is present, and give its percentage :—

4. Describe, sketch, and state the principle of action of any apparatus for enabling a person to enter a poisonous mine atmosphere.

5. Explain the cause of spontaneous ignition of coal underground, and state what gases are given off during the process.

SINKING, FITTING, AND PUMPING.

1. In order to have the highest efficiency in steam production, what are the conditions necessary and the points that require special attention?

2. Answer the same question in regard to winding and pumping engines.

3. Since the introduction of electricity in mining operations, what new risks have to be guarded against, and how can this be done?

4. If required to ascertain separately the fuel consumption per H.P. required for a winding and a pumping engine supplied with steam from the same boilers, how would you proceed?

5. In addition to having a certificate, what are the qualifications necessary to fit a manager for an extensive charge?

One hour and a half allowed for this paper.

WINDING, HAULAGE, AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALS.

1. Make a drawing of a winding shaft suitable for an output of 120 tons an hour from a depth of 150 fathoms. Allow for ventilation and show all dimensions and divisions, specifying the kind and size of guides and cages you would adopt with hutches to contain 10 cwts. each.

2. For such a shaft and output, and with steam at 80 lbs. per square inch, describe a suitable winding engine; giving sizes of cylinders, stroke, drum, sheaves, and ropes. State also the kind of foundation or engine seat you would provide, and the probable cost of the whole, including engine house.

3. What are the qualifications requisite in an engineman for winding a large output from a deep shaft?

4. In fixing the site for a new colliery, what are the general conditions that should be taken into account?

5. A pithead platform 30 feet by 12 feet is to be covered either with cast-iron or steel plates. State the quantity and weight, and estimate the cost of each class; specify the sizes and thickness you would use, and say which you would prefer for reasons given.

SURVEYING AND DRAWING.

1. Plot the following surface and underground surveys to a scale of one inch to a chain. Both surveys begin at the centre of a shaft A. Surface Survey: A to B, N. 75° E., 103 links; from B, along boundary, S. 2° W., 300 links. Underground Survey: A to C, N. 85° W., 55 links; C to D, S. 5° W., 210 links; D to E, N. 87° E., 153 links; E to F, N. 84° E., 248 links; Fto G, N. 5° W., 100 links; G to H, N. 2° E., 111 links; H to A, S. 83° W., 323 links.

2. In Q. 1 give the area (in acres and decimals) of the seam worked beyond the surface boundary; also the tonnage produced from the area, assuming the seam to be coal 3 feet thick; specific gravity, 1.24.

3. The surveys in Q. 1 were made in the year 1906; in addition to the magnetic meridian of that year, lay down upon the plotting the magnetic meridian of the year 1896. State how you arrive at the latter. 4. In Q. 1 the altitudes of the points A, C, D, E, F, above a datum, are respectively 15.22 feet, 16.01 feet, 29.55 feet, 27.03 feet, and 28.55 feet. Plot a section of the roadway to a scale of 1 inch to a chain for horizontals, and 1 inch to 10 feet for verticals. A road of uniform gradient is to be made from A to F. Calculate the gradient, mark this on the section and also the height of banking or depth of cutting at each point necessary to attain the gradient.

5. Make a neat drawing of an ordinary pump pipe, 9 feet long by 12 inches in diameter and 14 inches

ARITHMETIC.

N.B.-The process by which the answer is obtained must be shown.

1. The contract for making a drift 5 feet 9 inches by 4 feet 6 inches is 11s. 3d. per lineal yard, what does it cost per cubic foot of material?

2. How long will two men, working together, take to finish a piece of work that one of them by himself can do the half of in 12 days, and the other takes 10 days to do the third part of it?

3. A bunker for storing coal measures 22 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 10 feet deep; what weight of coal will it contain if the specific gravity of the coal is 13?

4. A leaking tank is filled by one pipe in 7 hours, and by another in 8 hours, they are turned on together for an hour; how much longer will the second alone take to fill the tank, allowing throughout for the fact that the leak will empty it in 56 hours?

5. A circular shaft 15 feet in diameter, and 150 fathoms deep, is two-thirds full of water; how long will an engine that can raise 17,000 gallons .an hour, take to empty it, supposing the only addition to the water is a leakage of 5 per cent. that falls back into the shaft?
