One generation fhall praise thy works unto another, and declare thy power.

As for me, I will be talking of thy worship, thy glory, thy praise, and wondrous works;

So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts : and I will alfo tell of thy greatnefs.

The memorial of thine abundant kindness fhall be fhewed: and men fhall fing of thy righteoufnefs.

The Lord is gracious, and merciful; long-fuffering, and of great goodness.

The Lord is loving unto every man, and his mercy is over all his works.

They fhew the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; C

That

That thy power, thy glory, and mightiness of thy kingdom might be known unto men.

Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all ages.

The Lord upholdeth all fuch as fall; and lifteth up all those that are down.

The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord; and thou giveft them their meat in due feason.

Thou openeft thine hand, and filleft all things living with plenteoufnefs.

The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his

works.

The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him: yea, all fuch as call upon him faithfully.

He will fulfil the defire of them that fear him; he also will

hear

hear their cry, and will help

them.

The Lord preferveth all them that love him; but fcattereth abroad all the ungodly.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; and let all flesh give thanks unto his holy name for ever and ever. Amen.

Then fhall be read the fecond leffon, taken out of the New Teftament, and after that the hymn follow

S. Luke, i. 68,

LESSED be the Lord God of Ifrael; for he hath vifited and redeemed his people; And hath raised up a mighty falvation for us, in the house of his fervant David;

[blocks in formation]

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been fince the world began;

That we fhould be faved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us:

To perform the mercy promifed to our forefathers; and to remember his holy covenant.

That we being delivered from our enemies, might serve him without fear;

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Amen.

Then fhall be faid the Apofles creed by the Minifter and the People.*

BELIEVE in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of hea

And

* Dr. Clarke makes no alteration in this creed, except in putting a comma after the

word

And in Jefus Chrift, his only fon, our Lord; who was conceived by the holy Spirit; born of the Virgin Mary, fuffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: the third day he rose again from the dead: he afcended into heaven, and fitteth at the right hand of God, the Father C 3 Al

word God in the firft article; to denote, that there is but one God, the Father.

The old word Ghost is changed, because liable to mislead fome readers. Quick is grown quite obfolete, or never ufed on grave fubjects.

He defcended into bell, was not inferted in the creed till 400 years after Chrift.

The holy catholic church, was at first only boly church-catholic not added to it till upwards of 300 years after Christ.

The communion of Saints came in some hundred years later.

Therefore these three articles of the creed, being of fo low a date, and also obscure, and of undeterminate meaning, can have no place in a folemn declaration of our faith before Almighty God.
