ye do hear and see; the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up, and the poor have the Gospel preached unto them."

Again, did his brethren perform any miracles? Yes! when our Lord chose that they should perform them in his name. When Jesus was walking on the sea of Gallilee, Peter stepped out of the ship to walk with Jesus; but, lo! Peter would have sunk instantaneously, but Christ immediately gave him

faith.

O, poor Socinians! Sinners! I know that I am writing all this, to those that are dead in sin. But yours is a death consistent with natural life, and you have a capacity to receive spiritual life; or else I would no more write this epistle to you than to a stone. I know that you are blind in sin; but this blindness is capable of spiritual illumination, or else I would no more attempt to persuade you, than I would a beast!

"God the Son," must be taken for thy Saviour, for thy Redeemer, and for thy Righteousness; He must be accepted as the only way to the Father, and the only means of life.

The Son of God is often called Christ,-Lord, Mediator, Son of God, and Emmanuel, but Jesus is all these. Jesus is Christ, as he is the anointed of God; and Lord, as he hath dominion over all the world. Jesus is mediator, as he is the reconciler of man to God, and the Son of God, as he was eter

nally begotten before all worlds. He is Emmanuel as he was incarnate, and so "God with us," only because Jesus signifies Saviour, and upon this very account was the name given him, "for he shall save his people from their sins."

I shall make it my design to look at Jesus, more especially, as carrying on the great work of our salvation from first to last. This is the glad tidings -"the Gospel-the gospel privilege and the gospel duty "looking unto Jesus."

Again, when they saw his miracles, they wor-shipped him, saying "thou art the Son of God." We should do the same, for we have "a more sure word of prophecy," that a person described as the Christ of God, should come into the world at the very time of our Lord's appearance. That his manner of life, his parentage, and his death, in every circumstance, should be such as they actually were. All this was foretold many hundred years before his birth-not by one only, but by numbers of prophets in succession. This is an indisputable fact. Now you know yourselves, that it is impossible for man to foretel what will happen five hundred years hence. God alone, to whom a thousand years are as one day, can do this by the mouth of his prophets; and OUR LORD's argument from the use of prophecy may be relied on in this case.. "Now I tell you before it come to pass, that when it is come to pass ye may believe that I am He"-that is the Christ. He directed the Jews to search the

Scriptures for prophetic testimony of his character. The apostles when they were brought before the great council of the Jewish nation, to answer for their behaviour and doctrine, boldly asserted in their own defence, that they said none other things than what Moses and all the prophets did say should come; and it is most certain, that throughout all the East, both Jews and Gentiles, expected his coming at the time when he appeared.

Can ye account for all this, Socinians? without supposing that God directed the spirit of prophecy to the testimony of Jesus. If you can, it is more than has ever yet been done. If you cannot, you ought to believe that Jesus is (as he was declared to be) the Son of God.

CHAP. IV.

THE ASSERTION OF UNITARIANS, THAT THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE ATONEMENT.

In answer to this, the great original design of atonement, is clearly seen in the original manuscript of Scripture truth. I would not venture to search in the Satanic Scripture of the Unitarians, without much difficulty, to illustrate the atonement was made for the sins of all the human race. To prove this, most beautifully and literally, our Lord useth the following words-He exhorteth his disciples to watch with him, when in the garden of Gethsemane, betrayed by Judas, one of the twelve. His words prove an efficacious atonement, by the shedding of his most precious blood: as he said "Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels. But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled that thus it must be;" his all powerful word could at this moment say, "Be ye like stocks and stones immoveable." But to bring forward the great

proof of the original prophecy, that sinful man should be so highly favoured. That the blood of Christ was covenanted by the Father, for the remission of man's sins.

It had been foretold many hundred years before that Christ should suffer, and should" make his soul

an offering for sin ;" and, therefore, if he had been delivered from the hands of the Jews, the word of Scripture would not have been true. To illustrate more. "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the Eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works, to serve the living God, and for this cause he is a mediator of the New Testament."

This is he whom angels and saints praise, and the heavenly host for ever magnify. Thus do you expatiate on the praises of God, and on his excellencies to thine heart, till the fire of love begins to kindle.

If thou feelest thy love not yet burn, lead thy heart further, and shew it Him whose name is "Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." Shew it the King of Saints, seated on the throne of his glory: the "First and the Last, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty," who liveth and was dead, and who lives for evermore: who hath reconciled all things by the blood of his cross, and hath prepared for thee a mansion of peace. Look at him as the great peace-maker, whose kingdom is the
