This Publication is chiefly intended for the benefit of the poor, for whom five hundred copies are reserved for gratuitous distribution through the respective districts of Scotland. Should this impression be disposed of by a sale of the priced copies, which barely cover the expense of the publication, another Edition will be instantly undertaken upon the same principle of a further extension of gratuitous copies for the Poor, and so to proceed as often as the sales of the other copies admit of forwarding the Author's design, who derives no pecuniary benefit from the Work.

THE EDINBURGH PHILOSOPHICAL JOURNAL, Con ducted by Dr BREWSTER and Professor JAMESON; exhibiting a View of the Progress of Discovery in Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Natural History, Practical Mechanics, Geography, Statistics, Navigation, and the Fine and Useful Arts. (To be continued Quarterly.) No. 1. to 6. handsomely printed in 3 Volumes Octavo, illustrated with numerous Engravings. £2, 5s. boards.

The object of this Journal is to exhibit a condensed and popular view of the progress of every branch of useful knowledge, not only by the publication of original and valuable articles in the different departments of Science and the Arts, but by collecting notices from the great mass of materials in the Foreign Journals, and giving brief abstracts of the labours of eminent individuals in every part of the world.

The Editors have made it their particular study to render a great proportion of the articles not only intelligible, but amusing, to those readers who have no pretensions to scientific knowledge; and they propose, in future numbers, to allot even more space to subjects of general reading. The three volumes now before the public, though a specimen of the manner in which the work will be conducted, exhibit hut few of the results of an extensive correspondence which has been established with India, China, North and South America, as well as every part of Europe. The effects of these arrangements, however, will gradually appear in future numbers.
