I ask this, I ask in fact, Is he your only hope? do you look to him as the Israelites looked to the brazen serpent-do you call on him as Peter, when sinking in the water, cried, "Lord save or I perish❞—or in the language of the psalmist, "whom have I in heaven but thee, and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee?" If you are so happy as to have fled to Christ, and to depend on him for salvation, you will shew by your life and conduct that your ways are directed to keep the statutes of the Lord; his ways will be yours, and his people your people; which may God grant for your benefit and his glory. You have fresh encouragement to make religion the one thing needful. The dear young friend whom some of you have borne to the grave, and whom we have followed thither, gave pleasing testimony to the pleasure he found in the ways of true godliness: much did he admire the grace and goodness of God in bringing him to experience a change of heart in the bloom of youth; and much, very much, did he rejoice in the salvation of sinners, and used every means in his power to seek the welfare of those whom he had influence over; never did I see a more pleasing evidence of real religion in one so young; and I feel happy at the thought how highly the Lord has honoured him in giving him such pleasures here, such bright prospects before he left the world, and in taking him from the snares and temptations which God's people have to combat with in this vale of tears, and crowning him so early with a crown of glory. Permit me just to say to his dear parent, brothers, and sisters, Dry up the starting tear, rejoice for the deceased, your loss is his infinite

gain; only believe in Jesus, and still press on, and heaven is yours for ever. Let such as have good ground to hope they are walking in his ways, ever take courage from what they have seen and heard from him; and may you, if any there be that are in doubt, be very earnest to make out that you have a title to that heaven where his happy spirit now rejoices before the throne of God.

SUNDAY SCHOOL ADDRESSES.

TO THE CHILDREN OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL.

(Without date.)

DEAR YOUNG FRIENDS,

In addressing a few words to you I wish to keep in mind that I have various ages and capacities before me; and though each of you has a soul that will endure for ever and ever, yet you are not all alike able to comprehend or understand the important things which belong to your present and eternal peace. You are all created by that great God who has made heaven and earth, the sea, and the dry land; and that great God has a right to your earliest services.

I would begin with little children-you little ones attend to what I now say: you have a great favour from God conferred on you that you are taught at this Sunday School. Some years back little children like you had none to care how they spent the Sabbath or Lord's day; many little ones like yourselves were wandering about the fields, and in winter it was no strange thing to hear of some poor careless little ones who left their parents, forsook the house of God, and were drowned by the breaking of ice;

and, O dreadful!-their souls sinking deeper into the waves of eternal misery than their bodies in the water. My dear little ones, think of your mercies; think of God's goodness in causing teachers to be willing to come and teach you, and to receive you to be taught; and let that thought make you willing to be constant in your attendance, and attentive and obliging to your teachers. And recollect, little children, you come here to say your catechisms and to be taught to read; and what for? that by it you may know about God and the Lord Jesus Christ, that blessed Saviour of whom your hymn tells you,

"His soul was gentle as a lamb,

And as his stature grew,
He grew in favour both with man
And God his Father too;

Now Lord of all he reigns above,

And from his heavenly throne,
He sees what children dwell in love,

And marks them for his own."

And now, who amongst you little ones wish to have Jesus mark you for his own? all that do must pray night and morning, and beg to be one of Jesus Christ's lambs; for he is so gracious that little children may be his lambs. O then dear little ones, don't think you are not noticed by the blessed Jesus; he has said, "Suffer the little children to come to me and forbid them not." But remember, if you are Christ's lambs you must be like lambs; and what are they? you have seen them; they are meek and gentle, they don't fight and quarrel, they love one another: and O, if you wish to be Christ's, you must not tell stories, you must "speak the truth always, and be honest and kind to all." But I must leave you

little ones, whom I have spoken to first that I might be the more likely to keep your attention.

I would now say a few words to those children who are neither the eldest nor the youngest in the school. Dear children, I often think of you, and as my situation is to attend to a class at a distance from you, I have no communication with you, which I sometimes regret, as I should like to know and converse with you all; but as my duty when here confines me from it, I the more readily embrace an opportunity now given me, of putting a few questions to you, which, though you will not be expected to answer me just now, I hope you will think of answering in your own minds, and if I or any of the teachers request an answer I hope you will give it; and my first question is, Have you any desire to serve the Lord? Do you wish to flee from sin and all bad ways? Do you believe that you will be punished in the world to come if you live and die without loving and serving Christ? Have you any wish to go to heaven when you die? and if so, how or in what way do you expect to get there? Do you know and believe that it must be through what Christ Jesus has done and suffered to save sinners? Now dear children, I have a few words to say more to you, and then I turn to the elder ones; you know I must take only a few things up at one time, or I could say more. Remember when you come to school, that your teachers love you, and not only pray for and with you, but that they long to know you real Christians in early life, that you may be members of Christ's church here and in the heavenly world.

And now I come round to you, my in the higher classes, to tell you how much I love your
