Lo! He comes! with clouds descending, Once for favoured sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending, Swell the triumph of His train : Halleluiah!

Jesus shall for ever reign.

Every eye shall now behold him,
Robed in dreadful majesty,

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced, and nailed Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing
Shall the true Messiah see.

Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear!
All His saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet Him in the air!
Halleluiah!

See the day of God appear!

Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,

High on Thine eternal throne ! Saviour! take the power and glory; Claim the kingdom for thine own!

Halleluiah!

Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!

16.

(Luther's Hymn.)

GREAT God! what do I see and hear!

The end of things created!

The Judge of mankind doth appear
On clouds of glory seated.

The trumpet sounds! The graves restore
The dead, which they contained before!
Prepare, my soul, to meet Him.

The dead in Christ shall first arise,
At the last trumpet's sounding,
To meet their Saviour in the skies,
With joy His throne surrounding.
No gloomy fears their souls dismay;
His presence sheds eternal day

On those prepared to meet Him.

But sinners, filled with guilty fears,
Behold His wrath prevailing ;
For they shall rise, and find their tears
And sighs are unavailing:
The day of grace is past and gone;
Trembling they stand before the throne,
All unprepared to meet Him.

Great God, to Thee our prayers we pour,
In deep abasement bending;

O shield us in that last dread hour,
Thy wondrous love extending.
in this our trial-day,

May we,

With wakeful hearts Thy word obey,
And thus prepare to meet Him.

THAT day of wrath, that dreadful day,
When heaven and earth shall pass away,
What power shall be the sinner's stay?
How shall he meet that dreadful day?

When shrivelling, like a parchéd scroll,
The flaming heavens together roll;
When louder yet, and yet more dread,
Swells the high trump that wakes the dead;

Oh! on that day, that wrathful day,
When man to judgment wakes from clay,
Be Thou, O Christ, the sinner's stay,
Though heaven and earth shall pass away.

THE Lord will come! the earth shall quake,
The hills their fixéd seat forsake;
And, withering from the vault of night,
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form He came,
A silent Lamb to slaughter led,
The bruised, the suffering, and the dead.

The Lord will come! a dreadful form,
With wreath of flame, and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Anointed Judge of human kind.

Can this be He, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppressed, and mocked by pride,
The Nazarene, the Crucified?.

Go sinners, to the rocks complain;
Go, seek the mountain cleft in vain :
While Faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy-The Lord is come!

CHRISTMAS.

CHRISTIANS, awake, salute the happy morn,
Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born;
Rise to adore the mystery of love,

Which hosts of angels chanted from above;
With them the joyful tidings first begun
Of God Incarnate and the Virgin's Son.
The praises of redeeming Love they sang,
And heaven's whole orb with Alleluias rang:
God's highest glory was their anthem still;
Peace on earth, and unto men good will;
This day hath God fulfilled His promised word,
This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord.
Oh! may we keep and ponder in our mind,
God's wondrous love in saving lost mankind:
Trace we the Babe, who hath retrieved our loss,
From the poor manger to the bitter cross;
Tread in His steps, assisted by His grace,
Till man's first heavenly state again takes place.

Then may we hope, the angelic hosts among,
To join redeemed a glad triumphant throng,
He that was born upon this joyful day
Around us all His glory shall display;
Saved by His love, incessant we shall sing
Eternal praise to heaven's Almighty King.

HARK, the herald angels sing-
Glory to the new-born King,
"Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
"God and sinners reconciled."

Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Lo! He lays His glories by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

C. M.

WHILE shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground,

The angel of the Lord came down

And glory shone around.
