March 25, 1920-" Optical Glass and Its Future as an American Industry."

BY ARTHUR L. DAY, PH.D.,

Director, Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution, Washington, D. C.

The development of optical glass in the United States was begun tentatively before our entry into the great war, but had not proceeded to a point where any assurance of adequate quality or quantity or variety could be given before the imperative needs of our own service were upon us.

The available surplus production of France and England was long since exhausted and what appeared even more discouraging, the technical details of manufacture and specifications were held secret in those countries. It therefore fell to the lot of American scientists to develop unaided, the entire technic of manufacturing glasses of the highest refinement, and to provide an adequate supply for all branches of the service within a period of a few months.

The story of this development will be told with illustrations, together with some account of the outlook for a permanent industry of sufficient magnitude to make the United States independent in future both in its military and commercial needs.

BY CHARLES E. MENDENHALL, PH.D.,

Professor of Physics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.

The lecture will deal with standard instruments for the determination of height, speed and engine performance; with certain special devices useful for bomb-dropping; and with the problem of airplane navigation and the instruments in use and under development for this purpose.

April 15, 1920-"Potash and the Cement Industry."

BY A. E. Wells,

Assistant Chief Metallurgist, Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, Washington, D. C.

Briefly, the lecture will cover the development of the process for the recovery of potash from cement dust, dating from initial experiments to the development carried on at Riverside, Calif., and extending through to the development of the types of recovery plants now in use (electrical precipitation installations) at eastern cement plants, and the wet method of recovery as employed at several of the western cement plants.

A discussion will be given as to the character of the mill recovery, the costs of the recovery of the dust, and costs of preparing pure potash salts by the treatment of these dusts.

Joint Meeting with Philadelphia Section, American Chemical Society.

April 21, 1920-"The Design of War Vessels as Affected by the World War."

BY REAR ADMIRAL DAVID WATSON TAYLOR, CHIEF CONSTRUCTOR, U.S.N., Chief of Bureau of Construction and Repair, Navy Department,

Washington, D. C.

During fifty-one months of the war there were many naval encounters, and the enormous value of sea power was fully exemplified.

The lecture will discuss the experiences of types existing at the beginning of the war, with particular reference to the improvements and changes in such types made or shown to be desirable during the progress of the war. The question of new types of war vessels growing out of war experience will also be briefly discussed.

April 29, 1920-Speaker and subject to be announced later.

May 19, 1920-Presentation of The Franklin Medal.
