3 Perfect our souls in every grace,
To' accomplish all His will;
And all that's pleasing in His sight
Inspire us to fulfil!

4 For the great Mediator's sake,
We every blessing pray.

With glory let His name be crowned
Through heaven's eternal day!

139. "That Great Shepherd of the sheep." Heb. xiii. 20,

21. 7's.

1 NOW may He who from the dead
Brought the Shepherd of the sheep,
Jesus Christ, our King and Head,
All our souls in safety keep.

2 May He teach us to fulfil
What is pleasing in His sight;
Perfect us in all His will,

And preserve us day and night!

3 To that great Redeemer's praise, Who the covenant sealed with blood, Let our hearts and voices raise

Loud thanksgivings to our God.

140.

"The peace of God which passeth all understanding.”
Phil. iv. 7. L. M.

1 THE peace which God alone reveals,
And by His word of grace imparts,
Which only the believer feels,
Direct, and keep, and cheer our hearts!

2 And may the holy Three in One,
The Father, Word, and Comforter,
Pour an abundant blessing down
On every soul assembled here!

141.

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love
of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost."
2 Cor. xiii. 14. 8's, 7's.

MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour,
And the Father's boundless love,
With the Holy Spirit's favour,
Rest upon us from above!
Thus may we abide in union
With each other and the Lord;
And possess in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford.

HYMNS FOR THE LORD's Supper.

142. "This do in remembrance of me." Luke xxii. 19

C. M.

1 ACCORDING to Thy gracious word, In meek humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord;
I will remember Thee.

2 Thy body, broken for my sake,
My bread from heaven shall be:
Thy testamental cup I take,
And thus remember Thee.

3 Gethsemane can I forget?

Or there Thy conflict see,
Thine agony and bloody sweat,
And not remember Thee?

4 When to the cross I turn mine eyes,
And rest on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my sacrifice!
I must remember Thee.

5 Remember Thee, and all Thy pains,
And all Thy love to me!

Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains,
Will I remember Thee.

6 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee,

When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come,
Then, Lord, remember me.

143. “Is it not the communion of the body of Christ?"

1 Cor. x. 16. L.M.

1 COMMUNION of my Saviour's blood,
In Him to have my lot and part;
To prove the virtue of that flood
Which burst on Calvary from His
heart;-

2 To feed by faith on Christ my bread,
-His body broken on the tree;-
To live in Him my living head,
Who died and rose again for me ;-

3 This be my joy and comfort here,
This pledge of future glory mine.
Jesus! in spirit now appear,

And break the bread, and pour the wine.

4 From Thy dear hand may I receive The tokens of Thy dying love; And, while I feast on earth, believe

That I shall feast with Thee above.

5 Ah! there, though in the lowest place, Thee at Thy table could I meet,

And see Thee, know Thee, face to face,
For such a moment death were sweet.

6 What then will their fruition be,

Who meet in heaven with blest accord? A moment?-No; eternity!

They are for ever with the Lord.

144. "Jesus took bread and blessed it." Matt. xxvi. 26.

P. M.

1 JESUS, Master of the feast!
The feast itself Thou art.
Now receive Thy meanest guest,

And comfort every heart.

Give us living bread to eat,

Manna that from heaven comes down.

See us waiting at Thy feet,

And make Thy favour known.

2 In this barren wilderness

Thou hast a table spread,
Richly filled with every grace
Our fainting souls can need:
Still sustain us by Thy love,

Still Thy servants' strength repair,
Till we reach Thy courts above,
And feast for ever there.

145.

"Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread." 1 Cor. xi. 28.

S. M.

1 O THOU Divine High-Priest!
To Thee I lift mine eyes.
Admit me to the blessed feast
Of Thine own sacrifice.

2 Break Thou to me the bread,
Type of Thy bruised frame.
Give me to hope that Thou hast bled,
To save my soul from shame.

3 Lord! while this cup goes round,
My inmost spirit try:

Can there be here one traitor found?
Oh say, Lord, is it I?

4 Horror is in that thought.

Lord of all grace and might,

Who with Thy blood my soul hast bought, Assert, secure Thy right.

5 Save me, for I am Thine:

Forgive, accept me now:

And let this sacred bread and wine
Seal and insure my vow.

146." I am the living bread which came down from heaven."

[ocr errors]

John vi. 51. 7's.

1 BREAD of Heaven, on Thee I feed,
For Thy flesh is meat indeed.
Ever may my soul be fed

With this true and living bread:

Day by day with strength supplied,
Through the life of Him who died.
