O Christ, Whom here below I see
Enshrin'd in form of Bread and Wine,
Hereafter in my heavenly home

To see Thee face to face be mine! Amen.

. He gave them Bread from Heaven: Ry. So man did eat angels' food.

Collect.

O Lord Jesu Christ, Who in the evening didst institute the Blessed Sacrament of Thy Body and Blood, and after Thy death wast laid in the sepulchre; grant that, being buried with Thee in Holy Baptism, we may daily rise to newness of life, and be worthy partakers of Thy life-giving Sacraments: Who livest and reignest God for ever and ever.

EVENING HYMNS.

I.

Hear us, holy Jesus,

Shepherd of the sheep,
And Thy little children,
'Neath Thy shelter keep.

Amen.

Night once more is coming,

Sleep and healthful rest;
Guard us through the darkness,
Jesu, Saviour Blest!

Pardon every evil

Word or thought or deed;

May we by Thy mercy

From all sin be freed.

So when morning cometh,
We may gladly rise,

And work for God our Father,
And our Home beyond the skies.

Now to God most holy,

Our eternal King,

Three Persons in one Godhead,

This evening hymn we sing. Amen.

II.

(For older Boys.)

Sweet Saviour, bless us ere we sleep,
With love of Thee our bosoms fill;
And make our youthful hearts to leap
With joy at doing Thy blest will.
Through life's dull way, till life's dread end,
O gentle Jesus, be our Friend.

Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways,
Free pardon and entire release,
And bless us more than in past days
With purity, and grace, and peace.
Thro' life's dull way, &c.

Thou too wert youthful once as we,
Mary and Joseph Thou didst fear;
O make us meek and pure like Thee,
And docile to our elders here.
Thro' life's dull way, &c.

Sweet Saviour! bless us: night is come;
Through night and darkness near us be;
Good Angels watch about our home;
And we are one day nearer Thee.

Thro' life's dull way, &c. Amen.

ADVENT.

The God who sojourn'd once on earth,
For three and thirty years,
And tasted, of His love for men,

All human griefs and fears;

Poor and despised, for sinners' sakes,
In great humility;

Till on the Cross He died a death
Of shame and misery;

Shall one day come in glory great,
And mighty majesty,

To judge the quick and dead, and fix
Their doom eternally.

Ten thousand Angels there shall stand
Around His glorious Throne,
On high the Sacred Cross be borne,
The sign His servants own.

Each action shall be strictly weigh'd,
Each thought and idle word:
How shall the guilty sinner stand
Before his righteous Lord?

Oh, may we grieve o'er every sin,
That we've committed here,
That in that dreadful Judgment we
May have no cause to fear.

Forgive, O Jesu, everything
That hath offended Thee,

That with Thy Saints we may rejoice
Through all eternity. Amen.

. Drop down ye heavens from above: Ry. And let the skies pour down righteous

ness.

Collect for the day, pages 203, 204.

CHRISTMAS.

See! amid the winter snow
Born for us on earth below;
See the tender Lamb appears
Promis'd from a thousand years.

Chorus.

Hail! thou ever blessed morn!
Hail! Redemption's happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Sing the Babe of Bethlehem!

Lo within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He who, throned in height sublime,
Sits amid the Cherubim.

(Chorus.) Hail, &c.

"Say, ye holy shepherds, say,
What your joyful news to-day?
Wherefore have you left your sheep
On the lonely mountain steep?"
Hail, &c.

"As we watch'd at dead of night,
Lo! we saw a wondrous light;
Angels singing, 'Peace on earth,'
Told us of a Saviour's birth."

Hail, &c.

Sacred Infant! all divine!
What a tender love was Thine!
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this!
Hail, &c.

Teach, oh teach us, holy Child,
By Thy face so meek and mild;
Teach us to resemble Thee
In Thy sweet humility.

[blocks in formation]

. The Word was made Flesh, alleluia: Ry. And dwelt among us, alleluia.

Collect for Christmas Day, page 204.

II.

Let us sing the Saviour's glory.
Sing with joy and holy mirth;
Tell aloud the famous story

Of His spotless Virgin birth!
How He comes, an Infant stranger,
Here to dwell with us on earth.

Now the long-expected fulness

Of the sacred time draws nigh:
Now for us the Word eternal

Leaves His Father's Throne on high,
From a Virgin's womb appearing
Cloth'd in our humanity.

All within a lowly manger,

Lo, a helpless Babe He lies;
See, His gentle Virgin Mother
Lulls to sleep His Infant cries,
