Fierce Raged the Tempest O'er the Deep

St. Aelred 8883

3

JOHN BACCHUS DYKES

1. Fierce raged the tem-pest o'er the deep, Watch did Thine anxious serv-ants keep,

But Thou wast wrapt in guile-less sleep, Calm and still.

A - men.

[blocks in formation]

Be Thou our Great Deliverer still,
Thou Lord of life and death;
Restore and quicken, soothe and bless
With Thine Almighty breath.
To hands that work and eyes that see
Give wisdom's heavenly lore,

That whole and sick, and weak and strong,
May praise Thee evermore. Amen.

We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died

Breslau L. M.

JOSEPH CLAUDER'S "Psalmodia Nova"

1. We sing the praise of Him Who died, Of Him Who died up

[blocks in formation]

+4

The sinner's hope let men de-ride: For this we count the world but loss. A-men.

2

Inscribed upon the cross we see
In shining letters, God is love:
He bears our sins upon the tree;
He brings us mercy from above.

3

The cross-it takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens every bitter cup.

4

It makes the coward spirit brave,

And nerves the feeble arm to fight;

It takes its terror from the grave,

And gilds the bed of death with light.

5

The balm of life, the cure of woe,

The measure and the pledge of love,

The sinner's refuge here below,

The angel's theme in heaven above. Amen.

THOMAS KELLY

[blocks in formation]

Turn not from His griefs a-way, Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

A-men.

2

Follow to the judgment-hall;

View the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall!

O the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
Learn of Him to bear the cross.

3

Calvary's mournful mountain climb;
There, adoring at His feet,

Mark that miracle of time,

God's own sacrifice complete:

"It is finished," hear Him cry;-
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

4

Early hasten to the tomb,

Where they laid His breathless clay;
All is solitude and gloom,

Who hath taken Him away?

Christ is risen;-He meets our eyes;
Saviour, teach us so to rise! Amen.
