HE former Aldine Edition of the "Life and Poems of Goldsmith,"

originally published in 1831, was edited by the Rev. John Mitford, and was generally admitted to be the most complete and correct edition that had up to that time appeared.

This edition is for the most part a reprint of Mr. Mitford's: the life has been carefully revised, two additional poems are included, and by the kind permission of Mr. Bolton Corney, in whose possession the manuscript now is, the publishers are enabled to reprint "Vida's Game of Chess." Several illustrative notes have been added, chiefly from Northcote's "Life of Sir Joshua Reynolds," and Mr. Forster's admirable biography of the poet.

June, 1866.
