It was praised as a pioneering work, but when Wilson and Macmillan published the English version, 'Sexual Inversion', in 1897 the Scottish historian and friend of Symonds bought up nearly the entire edition in order to avoid a scandal accruing to the Symonds family. It was re-issued in 1897 under the new title 'Studies in the Psychology of Sex' with Symonds name expunged. |
