MIDWIVES AND MATERNITY HOMES BILL.

An Amendment proposed, in page 1, line 11, to leave out the words "Any person, not being," in order to insert the words "If any person, being either a male person, or a woman not "-(Sir Kingsley Wood),-instead thereof.Question, "That the words proposed to be left out stand part of the Clause,"-put, and negatived.

Question, "That those words be there inserted,”-put, and agreed to.

Another Amendment made, in page 1, line 12, by leaving out the word "who "-(Sir Kingsley Wood).

Another Amendment made, in page 1, line 15, by leaving out the words "shall, unless that person," and by inserting the words "that person shall, unless he or she "-(Sir Kingsley Wood),-instead thereof.

Clause, as amended, agreed to.

: Clause 2.

An Amendment proposed, in page 1, line 19, to leave out sub-section (1), in order to insert the words :

"(1) Where a midwife has been suspended from practice in order to prevent the spread of infection she shall, if she was not herself in default, be entitled to recover from the local supervising authority such amount by way of compensation for loss of practice as is reasonable in the circumstances of the case.

In sub-section (2) of section six of The Midwives Act, 1918, the words from or where' to 'infection' shall be repealed "-(Sir Kingsley Wood),--instead thereof.

Question, "That sub-section (1) down to the word 'midwife,' in line 23, stand part of the Clause,"―put, and negatived.

Remaining words omitted.

Question, "That those words be there inserted,”—put, and agreed to.

"In this part of this Act local supervising authority' means

(a) as regards a county borough the council
of that borough;

(b) as regards a non-county borough or any
borough the population of which exceeds
50,000, and the council of which is an
authority for the purposes of The Maternity
and Child Welfare Act, 1918, that council;
(c) as regards any other area the county
council"-(Sir Douglas Newton).
