Traces the history of Jews in Westphalia during the 11th-15th centuries. Discusses various aspects of Jewish life and of the policies of the rulers in regard to the Jews. Relates extensively to acts of antisemitism - blood libels, host desecration accusations, riots, and expulsions. Reports on pogroms which followed the Black Death epidemic, in 1350, during which ca. 900 Jews were murdered. Although in 1372 a community was established again in Dortmund, and in 1500 in Lippe, Westphalian Jewry did not reach its former number up to the end of the medieval period. This fact was also related to the destruction of the nearby community of Köln in 1424. States that with the ruin of the Rhenisch basis, Westphalia's Jewry withered and lost its impact. Pp. 181-317 contain sources, notes, and appendixes.
