Volumes 1-6 recount the history of the Jewish people in various year groupings: (1) "Ancient 1935"; (2) "September 1935 to December 1938"; (3) "January 1939 to December 1941"; (4) "January 1942 to June 1943"; (5) "July 1943 to April 1945"; (6) "May 1945 and After." Volumes 7 and 8 provide resources for further study: (7) " A Collection of Primary Sources"; (8) "A Comprehensive Listing of Media for Further Study." The volumes are designed and written to educate the juvenile reader. They contain chronologies, glossaries, source notes, a list of references for further reading, a bibliography to support the historical narrative, and numerous photographs. This volume five explores the unique aspects and events in the period of the Holocaust between June 1943 and May 1945. Its introduction is entitled "Dark Years" and tells of the enactment of the Final Solution' by the Nazis with the destruction of the Jews. Chapters are presented chronologically and are entitled: (1) "July-September 1943 -- They Weren't Humans"; (2) "October 1943 -March 1944 -- We Have No Time"; (3) "March-June 1944 -- Butterflies Don't Live Here in the Ghetto"; (4) "June-September 1944 -- We Didn't Know"; (5) "September 1944-January 1945 -- We Had Been Counted"; and (6) "February-April 1945 -- Nothing but Bread." A chronology of the Holocaust from 1933-1945 is presented. (EH) |
