Surveys the history of Jews in Rhineland and Westphalia. Pp. 54-87 deal with the Nazi period. Discusses Jewish reactions, e.g. the establishment or increase of Jewish social and welfare institutions, educational and cultural associations, youth movements and sports groups, and courses for professional training. Describes the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, after which the number of Jewish residents in the region diminished from 63,610 to 27,893, due to emigration. Describes the process of discrimination, isolation, and persecution. Reports on deportations to Łódź, Minsk, and Riga in 1941 and to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz in 1942. In March 1943 only 796 Jews remained in Westphalia; in Rhineland 4,640 Jews were deported.
