Review: The Romantic Exiles

Redaktioneller Bericht - Kirkus Reviews

A rather unusual sidelight on Western Europe during the forties and fifties of the last century. It is the story of a distinguished group of men and women, all of them exiles of one sort or another, frequently victims of their own -- for those days -- revolutionary points of view, -- many of them very rich, many of them with strange personal histories and backgrounds, all tinged with the romantic spirit of their age. The scene shifts from Russia, from Germany, and so on, to Paris, London, the Riviera, always with an amazing interplay of personalities and a romantic glamor. Diaries, letters, interviews with the few survivors of the group and their descendants, have been the basis on which the story is built.
