Redaktioneller Bericht - Kirkus ReviewsUpon arrival at an extermination camp in Poland in 1943, Katerina Horovitzova, a nineteen year-old dancer, black-haired and ""beautiful but cowardly,"" told her father that she didn't want to die. Overhearing her remark, Herman Cohen, one of twenty rich European-born American Jews who had been picked up by the Nazis when they overran Mussolini's Italy and who had allegedly bought their freedom in exchange for a group of big-shot German officer POW's, offered to pay her ransom. Rather strangely, Katerina was separated from her family (who were immediately gassed), and included in the magnates' convoy which -- shepherded by the diabolical Nazi commander Brenske -- was driven around the Polish-German countryside in a grotesque wild-goose chase after their fraudulently promised liberation. Lustig, a novelist who is himself a veteran of the camps, focuses on the cool, blackmailing, officious and immoral Brenske; Katerina remains a shadowy form cowering behind her protector Cohen (with whom she concluded a marriage of convenience) until, realizing that she would die after all, she shoots her captors at the gas chamber door. Lustig, in understated prose, and for a diminishing audience, has recorded the story of one Jew who, contrary to Arendt's wholesale condemnation, refused to submit passively.
